Match report
Carnegie began the 2009 season with a trip to St Andrews to take on St Andrews University Staff. The weather gods were smiling as we were blessed with a stunning day (if you don't believe me check out Stevie's sunburn!). Bob Hunter got his season off to a flyer by leading the convoy into St Andrews and back out the other side before eventually finding the Ground. Mitch won the toss and elected to bowl first on a cracking wicket. St Andrews made a solid start but the belligerent Kevin 'Rooster' Ross soon bowled one of the openers. Ross struck again when his much vaunted slower ball was spooned to the fresh faced Jamie Lee at point. As we had 12 players Kevin disappeared at the end of his spell to sit in the shade for a while. With Ross asleep St Andrews began to build a tidy score before a double strike from Mitchell and a run out slowed them down. Frankland played a number of big shots as he passed 50 and the Carnegie fielders began to bake under the hot sun. Walker unbelievably dropped a catch of a Lafferty doosra as the game entered a crucial phase. The ever bashful Ross woke up and demanded another bowl and promptly clean bowled the last three batsman with successive deliveries to claim his first ever hat-trick and a rare five wicket haul. The Rooster celebrated by thumping his Captain and knocking over two fielders. St Andrews all out for 187 in 35 overs.
In Lafferty and Daughtrey gave Carnegie a good start before both were caught. Mitchell and Lindsay took the score to 120-2 in 25 overs and Carnegie were seemingly on easy street. The dismissals of Mitchell and Lindsay exposed Carnegies inexperienced middle order and wickets began to fall with alarming regularity. It was left to Bob Hunter to weather the storm and delay the inevitable with a string of cavalier shots in his gallant 0 not out. Carnegie 131 all out.
An excellent day was had by all in the sunshine. Kevin Ross rightly picked up the Man of the Match Award for his spell of 5-20 off 6 languid overs. Josh was awarded the 'Thanks for Coming Award' for dropping a catch off the Captain's bowling. A two week break now before our first league game and a welcome opporunity to practise batting!!
