Match report
Carnegie headed over the bridge to a scorching Edinburgh on Saturday, with a visit to a cracking ground at Pefermill. Vignesh made his Saturday debut, coming in for Matty Wauchop. Nelly was also back in as Harris was not allowed out to play.
It was a dry track and temperatures sizzled towards 30 degrees. Mitch lost the toss and we had to bowl in the hot sun. Butch opened up and bowled a cracking tight spell. The same could not be said for Gav, who like an old steam train, struggled up the hill and into the warm breeze. Gav did pick up a wicket with a good ball, after a collection of rank deliveries.
Mitchell, usually dependant on cloud cover and freezing temperatures to suit his wobblies, bowled a tight spell and picked up a few wickets. Vignesh was first change after Butch, and looked a talent. He got a wicket in his second spell, and deservedly so. Fiedling was top class on a rapid outfield, catches were taken well and some cracking stops. Best of the day was Graham Lindsay. Bruce and Murray were bowlers 5 and 6. Bruce bowled an almighty spell, but couldnt get the dollies to deal. Muzza was toiling after a night on the sauce and was thankful to be taken off after 2 harrowing overs. I heard he scored later that night, so he wasnt too fussed. Gav and Butch wrapped it up at the end, and although we couldnt quite get them out, we had defended very well on a belting pitch. Editors note - Gav got better the closer he got to getting a rest.
Confidence was high amongst the team after some major run totals on ropey tracks in the first 3 games. However, the game soon demised into a race to the pond contest, as opposed to the top of the league. Had we won, and Peebles lost, Carnegie would have enjoyed top spot that night. It was a case of "nice to see you, to see you nice" for Bruce who fell quickly for 0. Lafferty then chopped on for 7, and John Hynd bowled through the gate for nought. Carnegie 10 for 3, and in deep trouble. In meandered Mitch to support Butch, who kicked off with confidence. The two quickly built in excess of a 50 partnership, and had the game back on track. Butch took a boundary through direct on his napper, and this put him off slightly. Sadly, he lobbed a simple catch to cover on 42, when he looked on course for a 2nd consecutive ton. Muzza found the beautiful wicket to his liking and quickly depstached 5 boundaries, much to the enjoyment of his old man on the Western terrace. When Mitch fell, Gav got his feet wet too, and it fell to G Man and nelly to find the 65 runs necessary to secure top of the table. They began to accumulate runs, before Graham lopped a charity catch to the pensioner at gulley, who gratefully accepted it. Bob came and went, rising to the top of the pond table. Last man in was Viggy, whho tried to find the final 40 runs quickly with some blazing shots. After a cracking 4, he was bowled, leaving Nelly (Simon Harper impressionist) not out on 8.
Fair play to Edinburgh Uni for a hard fought game, and they deserved the 20 points. For Carnegie, its onto the "spit and sawdust" derby at Broomhall next week. Yeehahhh!!!!
