Stenhousemuir 2nd XI v Dunfermline Carnegie Cricket Club First Team on Sat 26 Jun 2010 at 1pm
Dunfermline Carnegie Cricket Club Won by 219 runs
Match report
Carnegie rattled up their biggest win of 2010 when they visited the Tryst on Saturday to take on Stnehousemuir. it was a scorchio, and former skip barney had been tempted out of retirement to play his first game of the 2009 season.
mitchell had two firsts of the season
A - he was there on time
B - he won the toss, and elected to bat on a belting county ground track
harris opened the batting with barney and scarfed the first ball of the match through long off for four. my lasting memory of this moment, was that mitch had lent stenny bruce for the first ball, as they had a player "in transit" . bruce chased the ball all the way to the rope, only for it to skip over the line as he gallantly made progress.
this begun a blazing run fest in the first twelve overs as barney and harris made hay in the sun. its nice to see barney enjoying running 3s as much as he used to. the stenny openers were expensive, but were replaced at one end by a young leg spinner whose quality quickly was on show, with a ball in his 2nd over resulting in a stumping for harris for 31. john hynd got off the mark with a simple single, but was then bowled by the spinner in what he only described as a "ripper"
This brought a rather "dehydrated" Muzz to the crease, who played some early shots to get off the mark. muzz was clearly trying solely to get onto the top of the sixes league, and was caught on the rope.
Barney battered his way past 50, much to the delight of the support in the bleachers. Sadly, the grand old duke of york then ran out of puff and was caught, before heading off for an ice bath.
Butch and Mitch tried to resteady the Carnegie innings, and took Carnegie up to 140, before Mitch too was done by the quality spinner, who had his 5 for.
Nelly joined Butch, and played a "best supportng actress" role initially, as butch scored the majority of the runs. Carnegie were on 140 for 5 after 25 overs and needed to show some mettle to use all 50 overs on a lovely track.
The pair saw off the spinner, who took 5 for 32, and set about taking Carnegie higher up the run total. Sadly, Butch was bowled in the mid 40s, and this brought Lafferty to the crease.
Lafferty and Walker guided Carnegie past 200 in the 37th over before Walker ballooned a stupid shot to mid off.
This brought in Bruce, who was eager to build on his total at Broomhall 10 days earlier. He got off the mark with a 4, thus avoiding the "olympic ring" of ducks.
Lafferty and Callan then put Stenny to the sword with a cracking 70 partnership, Lafferty lifting his bat as he blazed past 50, and Callan finishing 21 not out. well done to both players.
Carnegie racked up 282, using all the overs at their disposal. Interestingly, there were 3 "all run" fours!
Stenny, in reply, could not offer a strong challenge. Gav and Butch bowled a cracking opening spell and took a wicket each.
It got worse for Stenny as Mitch and Harris were in miserly mood. Stenny fielded a mainly young side, with many cracing prospects in their team. However, mitch and harris both took a wicket, as Carnegie moved towards winning the tie
Then a young Geoffrey boycott came into play. This young lad blocked and blocked. And although he didnt score too many runs, he played with fantastic concentration and technique to offer some strong resistance
Eventually, after over an hour, Monty forced a breakthrough, with Gav taking a nervour catch at silly mod off.
Butch and Gav then finished things off, and Carnegie headed to the bar with a 2nd vitory on the bounce recorded
For Stenny - they have some cracking young players, and I am sure that in a year or two, they will be very competitive.
man of the match - I think Butch has pipped Barney nad Matty Laff this week
thanks for coming - john hynd accepted the award.
Thats the turn now, and Kirk Brae at fortress Pitreavie next week is that start of the long road home. Can Carnegie muster a late promotion challenge?
From the book, scorer.
