Dunfermline Carnegie Cricket Club Carnegie XI (friendly) v Edinburgh South on Sun 27 Jun 2010 at 1pm
Dunfermline Carnegie Cricket Club Won by 41 runs

Match report The Carnegie Youth Team (CYT) put on a fine display beating Edinburgh South by 41 runs at a sun-soaked Pitreavie.

Carnegie fielded a mixed side with a massive age swing, featuring the near-to-school Charlie "Chas" Denton and the near-to-retirement Donald "The Don" Walley.

With Skipper Lindsay doing his best to mimic the tardiness of our first team captain, it fell to Vice Captain and Scotland Internationalist Bob "Bobcat" Hunter to toss the coin. With the toss won, Bob took the bold decision to bat first on a Pitreavie wicket that looked more like a cricket wicket than its done all season. Well done to the guys who put in the work midweek.

So, we opened with a Pike and Bruce Forsyth. Its not everyday you hear that. Pike looked comfortable early on, playing some nice shots, and some even nicer forward defensive prods. Brucie was looking for a bonus in the Pitreavie sun but unfortunately it wasn't to be. Stepping across a ball early in his innings, being bowled on his leg stump. Theres now a clear leader in the race to the duck pond...!

On came Gordy "" Philp, a bit short of match practice this season and looking to get his eye in. Just realised we don't have a nickname for Gordon. Lets sort that for next week guys! Gordon was stroking some nice shots but his batting partner Pike clearly didn't fancy hanging around, caught for 16.

This brought Carnegie legend The Don-meister to the crease. Looking fine in his wide brimmed hat, The Don looked to stamp his mark on the proceedings. Whilst The Don was looking for his stamp, Philpy got himself caught for 11. Carnegie needed someone to come in and start putting some runs on the board.

On came KP. One or two close shaves looking for quick singles kept The Don on his toes. Running 3's was out of the question...! As Carnegie looked to increase the run rate The Don, probably blinded by the rim of his hat, mistimed one and was caught for 6.

With approx 70 runs on the board, on came Carnegie stalwart and Scotland Internationalist Bob Hunter. Redefining the meaning of the word "partnership", Bob and KP set about racking up the runs with KP theiving strike at every opportunity and Bob setting a brisk pace between the stumps. Some fine running saw the scoreboard creep up and after a couple of overs Bob issued the warcry to KP with a target of 120 runs. Helped by some slips in the field, Carnegie pressed on. Bob started opening up the shoulders (!) and was caught mistiming a big six for a majestic 7. A great parnership of approx 50 between Bob and KP.

This brought skip Lindsay to the crease with only a couple of overs left. Graham was bowled for 3 on the final ball and KP finished on a fine 61.

Old Phil, Young Charlie, Stevie Hunter and Viggy were left kicking their heels on the sidelines - you will get a bat higher in the side next time out guys.

Tea was had in the sun, before moving indoors for a few minutes to watch the start of the England world cup humping.

Carnegie opened with Vignesh and Brucie. Viggy, struggling a bit with his run up, found it difficult getting his rhythm and Bob needed to display some fine acrobatics behind the stumps to keep the byes count to a minimum. At the other end Bruce started well, looking to make amends for his duck with some fine bowling.

Edinburgh South started brightly, with Chapman looking to maintain his recent form (125 the other week). It was clear that he would be a key wicket in Carnegies bid to win the match. Chances were coming though with Chapman hitting out, Gordon Philp unlucky not to catch him in the slips after a slash at a quicky Colin Nish delivery.

With the game finely poised, Bob made an incredulous catch behind the stumps taking the wicket of the dangerman Chapman. After a good edge from Chapman, Bob dived full length to his right taking the ball low 2 yards from his starting point. Slipman Gordon Philp declared it "the most amazing catch" he'd ever seen, however Bob was quick to heap praise on the bowling of Viggy...The crowds inside, preferring the football to this game of cricket missed out!

Shortly afterwards, Carnegie brought on their secret weapon. The diminuitive Denton bowled from the posh end racing through his 5 overs taking 3 wickets for 8, with 2 maidens. Economy of 1.60 earned Charlie the MoM award - and well deserved too.

With some key wickets out of the way, Carnegie looked to close the game out; Bob taking a stumping, Brucie running out two and catching two, a catch from Gordon (off Charlie!). Bob swapped his pads for the ball and took a wicket with The Don catching behind, Old Phil rolled back the years taking one wicket off his two overs. Check out the scorecard, some economical bowling from the Carnegie Youth Team!

With a 41 run victory in the bag, the Carnegie guys retired to the bar for a well earned pint. An enjoyable day out at Pitreavie.

Man of the Match was Charlie Denton, TFC was Stevie Hunter.
