Dunfermline Carnegie Cricket Club Lost by 65 runs
Match report
Winston Churchill, George Washington, Nelson Mandela, all great leaders in history. Well today we can add the name Kevin Ross to this list after his debut as captain of the Carnegie Cheetahs last night. Despite personally taking two wickets, a catch and being left stranded with a strike rate of 400 the Cheatahs lost to a strong Gladiator team who had 4 1st division players in their ranks.
Having gone over above the call of duty to pick up Phil from Dollar, Kev subsequently lost the toss and was asked to field. Starting with only 7, due to the late arrival of Monty, (He must have thought Matty was on the LSD again after being told to turn right at the roundabout and lookout for the Hippos) Kev entrusted the new ball to the strike partnership of Bob and Phil. Bob bowled with great accuracy and was unlucky not to claim the wicket of the first team captain after a rocket was unfortunately spilled by the captain who had positioned himself expertly at mid wicket. Luckily the drop was not to be too expensive as the following 54 runs he scored didn’t play any part in the end result.
Despite a lack of wickets the team were bowling and fielding well as the Gladiators racked a quick fire 90 odd without loss. In search of a wicket the skipper placed Stevie Hunter close in and was rewarded when he pounced to run out the opening bat. Monty, who had found his way to the ground, took over from Bob with Matty bowling at the other end. Matty was bowling with great pace but was unlucky not to reap the rewards of the 80 mph bowling and his captain requested that he give it a bit of spin. He was rewarded immediately when a steepling catch was taken by Kev comfortably as well as a diving catch by Stevie. Monty at the other end was keeping it tight and managed to quickly pick up two wickets with the pick of them being the catch from Bob which may have broken his wrist. Kev came on to bowl at the end and struck twice in quick succession to bring the Gladiators innings to an end on a paltry 147.
In reply the Cheatahs opened with Matty and Josh, who was making his first appearance of the season. Some quick run singles followed before Josh was undone by a beautiful in dipper. This brought to the wicket the much anticipated innings of Bob. He was looking poised and ready to strike when he played round a straight one and was bowled first day. In came the Don who was looking good before he wove to a ball that went on to take his off stump. In fairness it did cut in massively, but we must learn to use that bit of wood that is in our hands.
At 3-3 things were not looking good but out strode a spritely Phil to the wicket. Over the next 30 minutes Phil rolled back the years as he struck the ball with a ferocity that hadn’t been seen since he was 53. Putting on a stand of 67 Carnegie looked as if they could win the game but Phil and then Matty threw their wickets away as they chased the 26 runs per over required. Monty played some great shots for his 5 before Kev was required to bring his special kind of mojo to the wicket. What followed will go down in history as the greatest innings of his career as he struck a wonderful 4 of the last ball to leave him with the 400 strike rate.
A great match, which was keenly fought ended in despair for the Cheetahs as the fell just short of the target finishing on 82. Afterwards the Gladiator captain was glowing in his praise for such a wonderfully marshalled team. 3 greats catches were taken by well placed fielders and it was good to see Phil back playing so well. It was difficult to give the TFC award but unfortunately Don picked up the award this week. Despite the captain probably playing a man of the match game he showed his humility by awarding it to Matty Lafferty. There were calls in the changing room after the game for Kev to take over captaincy of the club which has led him to announce his candidacy for the role.
