Dunfermline Carnegie Cricket Club Lost by 136 runs
Match report
The 28th of April 1993 was 'the night a team died' as Scotland crashed to a 5-0 thumping against Portugal. Seasoned commentators may try and apply the same logic to the Carnegie Cheatahs as they fell at the final hurdle in their search for FPL glory. Thankfully a wonderfully entertaining cameo from James 'Bruno' Bream brought the Cheatahs version of the Tartan Army to its feet and ensure the support went home with a smile on its face.
The weather gods had smiled on the Cheatahs by delivering a beautiful summers evening at an idyllic ground. Carnegies preparations were disrupted somewhat as their 'gun' batsman Bob Hunter was delayed and only his international status saved him from further questioning.
The Cheatahs lost the toss and were asked to field by a confident Broomhall side who made a rapid start as Denton and Lindsay struggled for accuracy. The introduction of T20 specialist Owais Goody ignited the game as he easily dismissed the opener twice with one ball, having a nick snaffled by Hunter who promptly stumped him for good measure. Owais struck again having the number three batsman stumped by Hunter who appeared to be operating in treacle. At the other end KP was getting a bit of tap so skipper Lindsay took the pads off Hunter and instructed him to operate in tandem with the legspin of Bruno Bream who had disappointed the large crowd with his choice of traditional cricket wear rather than his NKOTB audition outfit. Bream and Hunter both struck twice as Broomhall were bundled out in only 18.1 overs. Disappointingly they had managed to score 189 in those 18.1 overs.
With the sun out and the beer flowing Carnegies openers of Lindsay, Callan and Pringle strode out to a carnival atmosphere. This was dampened somewhat when Lindsay nicked the first ball to register diamond ducks for himself and his runner, the unfortunate KP. This brought in Lafferty in an unfamiliar role at number 3 and he rose to the challenge with a flurry of singles. Callan was next to go clean bowled for 1 to give himself an average for this years of FPL of 133. This brought KP to the wicket and somewhat uniquely he registered his second first ball duck of the innings as he was run out first ball (this is a feat even Bob and Bruce have not managed!!) The next delivery saw Goody clean bowled first ball which brought crowd favourite Hunter to the wicket but he was cleaned up first ball by an identical straight ball. Next up was Charlie who resisted well for 5 balls and played one lovely late cut for 4 before suffering the same fate as Goody and Hunter. Last up was the now legendary figure of Bruno Bream who had clearly upset Broomhall who responded to his challenge by bringing on their number 1 fast(ish) bowler - Bream took a bit of umbrage at this and deposited him over mid wicket for an effortless boundary before winning the resulting stare off hands down. 15 off the over. By now the crowd, swelled by the late arrival of Happy Harris who had got his schedule wrong and gone to PJs before the game, was on its feet singing and dancing along with the Samba band. Sadly the fun had to end as Bruno was caught hooking to mid wicket. The Cheatahs were all out for 53 having been 23-6 at one stage, Lafferty finished on a gallant 26 not out from 35 balls (strike rate of 74!!)
In the end we were 135 runs short but a good night seemed to be had by all including the sizeable travelling support of Nelly, Mrs Nelly, Stuart, Ruth, Hen, Matt W, Stevie, Butch, Kev, Harris (eventually!), Bongo and JP.
Man of the Match was the simply sensational James Bream.
TFC has to be KP for registering two ducks and bowling 4 overs for 45.
