Carlton 3 v Dunfermline Carnegie Cricket Club First Team on Sat 30 Apr 2011 at 1pm
Dunfermline Carnegie Cricket Club Won by 5 wickets
Match report
Carnegie travelled to the beautiful location of Peffermill for the 2011 season opener. Opponents were Carlton 3rd XI, newly promoted from division 5 to the league. With the Pars title party promised in Greenock, Carnegie could only muster 10, with Philip coming out of retirement to take the keepers gloves, and Lee and Parsonage making first team outings.
Pre match captains thoughts "we are a good bowling side, not sure how many runs we will get". Well, the match went not quite to his precision planning.
The new skipper won the toss, and chose to have a field. The wicket at Peffermill was as normal, flat and rock solid. The outfield also promised to be fast. With only ten players, Carnegie would do well to cover the ground over the course of 50 overs in the hot sun.
##############THE VAGAZZLE###########
Is a new term to describe taking a wicket with the first ball of the season.
Butch ran up to bowl, it was a yorker / full toss (depending on the favourableness of one's analysis) - the batsmen had a swing and a miss - and Carlton were 0 for 1. After a quick joke that would do for the whole season, we got back about the task at hand. It seemed easy for the first 3 overs as we only lost one run.
Skipper Newman had joined the remaining opener at the crease, and set about his innings in a conservative fashion, making sure that he maintained his life as Carnegie fielded very well.
Wauchops bowling was swinging more than Tommy Sheridan on a day out, and his first 6 overs only went for 8 runs.
Change bowlers were Ross and Muzz. Gav started with a maiden, and warmed up sufficiently to start to sting Phil's gloves. Phil was keeping very well.
Muzza's first 4 overs went for 25 as the outfield dried up and the batsmen got in, and set about a 20 over partnership worth 74 runs. Nelly brought an end to the partnership, clean bowling the opener for 22.
Flash had a bash at bowling, but was saving his book of tricks for later in the day.
Once Nelly had taken the game forward, this let in the openers to complete their spells. Unfortunately Gav blew old Phil's thumb off with a ripper and we required a new keeper. Gordy "John O'Shea" Philp was first volunteer, and he showed bravery in stopping the first ball off Gav with his chin!
Newman was playing incredibly well, and marched through 50 on his way to a ton. He played each ball on its merits, and led the way as captain.
We must thank Carlton for supplying us with a fielder whilst Phil was off finding superglue to re-attach his thumb. Top marks.
Come the final 14 overs, Carnegie were tired, and this allowed Carlton to exploit their wickets in hand. 95 runs were scored off the last 84 balls.
Carnegie could be proud of their efforts in the field, as each player worked hard and put in a top effort.
At lunch, the chat focussed on keeping wickets in hand, and waiting on the bad ball. The wicket was still playing true, and perhaps we could tot up a good score to be proud of. Word was coming in from Greenock that the Pars were a goal up, and we thought "why not"?
Martin opened up with Gordy, and allowed the book keepers to nip off to the bar for the first 4.2 overs, for a quick pint. Not a whiff of a run.
It was bloody freezing by this point, but the players hearts were warmed by a title victory for the Pars, and an incredible two goal festival from Saints at Hibs.
Pike then boffed a once bounce four in the 7th over, and Carnegie were 0 for 12.
After 10, we had 22 runs as Gordy started his innings with 3 consecutives 2s.
Carlton then got back on top and after 15 overs, Carnegie had only mustered 33 runs.
However, most critically, Gordy felt the thumb print pressure of his wife starting to heat up, and this led to him taking more chances. It was 5.30pm, and his pass only lasted until 6pm. Gordy opened up and hammered numerous boundaries. This relaxed Martin and Carnegie scored 45 off the next ten overs.
At drinks, Carnegie were 88 without loss. Gordy phoned his wife, got an extension to his pass, and started to focus on seeing what he could achieve. His 50 came up with a hook over square leg, and he quickly found himself in the 60s. Martin's 50 came up too, as Carnegie pass 100 in the 27th over.
With 20 overs to go, Carnegie were 119 without loss. We were beginning to take the "without loss" element for granted, but fair play to Gordy and Martin for a fantastic partnership.
Gordy's first career ton came up with a quickly scampered single, to the delight of his team mates. He fell on 106, and left to a standing ovation and congratulations from his team mates. A memorable innings from our man of the match!
It should also be noted that the partnership was 172. It will take Carnegie historians some time to find an opening partnership of the same magnitude.
Martin fell shortly after on 67, a great start to the season. Martin's form was helped by his energy bound son James, who for what felt like the duration of his innings, ran repeated laps of the outfield.
Carnegie needed a run a ball off the last 10 overs, and we had started to become more confident as Butch strode to the crease. After a quick fire 50 in the friendly at Broomhall, we felt that Butch was well placed to help Carnegie home. He started with a 6, but fell to a trundler for 11.
Wauchop, Philip and Walker all fell cheaply, including two run outs.
Carnegie needed 24 off 18 balls when skipper Ross strode out to the crease to support Muzz. Muzz himself had batted like he was half asleep, and the crowd was quiet as the game was going in the favour of Carlton
Luckily, Muzz was woken up as Gav drilled his 2nd ball straight down the ground for 4, and followed it up with a huge nick that rattled down to the unmanned 3rd man position for a second successive boundary. Muzz then followed suit with a few lusty blows, and Carnegie crept towards victory.
The final over - Carnegie needed 6 to win. The over started with an incredible run out opportunity after another mix up. But this time, rather than a wicket to fall, it went in our favour as one lucky run became two due to Carltons failure to back up a run out attempt.
This brought the field in, and Muzz banged a four over mid ons head to secure 20 points for Carnegie.
It was a terrific contest, and both teams would have deserved the win. A beer was shared back at Grange Loan, before Carnegie smuggled the 20 pts in a suitcase back over the bridge.
From the west, with tired legs (can we field 11 next week please?)
