Stirling 3 v Dunfermline Carnegie Cricket Club First Team on Sat 02 Jul 2011 at 1pm
Dunfermline Carnegie Cricket Club Won by 39 runs

Match report Fresh from victory against Stirling 3s at a rain soaked Pitreavie the previous week – Carnegie made the treck for the return match at Stirling.

Back from 3 weeks holidaying Kev Ross returned to the role of captain and promptly failed to win the toss. Carnegie were inserted – and so the battle were to begin,

Picture this:-
The scene was beautiful looking towards Stirling Castle – The splendant sunshine – Forfarshire led by ex Scotland Captain Ryan Watson and a young Stirling County side battling it out in a National Premier League Match on the pitch below with Stirling Castle prominent in the background and the shimmering calm river passing by. Contrast that image with……on the top pitch Pike and Flash striding out to the middle to open the batting for Carnegie….

Flash was bowled early on as Carnegie got off to a poor start – Barney making the trip north for this battle went in and played a few nice strokes before being caught by a lassie and bowled by a Lassie for 9.

David Miller (39) strolled out to the crease and confidently smashed some boundaries including hitting 18 off an over. Wilson’s nephew accused Miller of trying to run him out at one stage. Pike played some delightful bashes before being caught for 29 – this brought to an end a partnership of around 60 runs. Muzz Callan came in and said he was just going to hit the bad ball. Miller lost concentration at the thought of this and lobbed the ball straight back to the bowler for 35.

Grandad Philip then came to the crease – Callan got bowled his first bad ball and smacked into the upper hemisphere – it came back down after knocking a few satellites out of orbit and landed in square legs hands – Callan trudged off with an entry into the Pond to his name.

Lafferty strolled out and played a true stalwarts innings. Never looking in trouble and nudging the ball around here and there as required. Grandad P, played the attacking game – and smacked two cracking big sixes – for a guy of 69 – the immense power to get the ball that far was unbelievable. Lafferty trudged on – Philip finally played one shot two many and his weary hit landed in the hands of a fielder – a fine quickfire knock of 22.

In and out went Banana man Wauchop for 4 and Skipper Ross played a skippers innings of 8. Nelly WW then got bowled for 3 which left Matty L having to try to keep number 11 batsman Monty of strike. Unfortunately Monty played all around his first ball and caught the ball in the middle of his pads standing right back on the stumps and was given out LB. Monty admitted later that he may have been out!!.

Matty L – had played a fine innings but was left stranded playing for his average on 33 Not Out. Carnegie ended up with a well below par total of 152 All out.

Tea was had.

The second innings began – new ball bowlers were Wauchop and Skipper Ross – In the absence of Hen Broon – Miller took the gloves.

Banana Wauchop bowled first and had the batsmen in knots – unable to reach any of the balls that started on leg stump and ended up way outside off. A field to the two left hander’s including 2 slips and 2 gully’s was in place at one point – but the only runs that came of his bowling were edges that evaded the cordon.

Ross Bowled with raw pace from the Castle end mainly down leg side to the bemusement of the slips – but still managed to pick up an early wicket before taking himself out of the attack after about two over’s of sheer pace – which had left him exhausted.

Flash Gordon replaced him at the castle end. No wickets were coming until Matty Banana bowled a slower ball and the batsman lobbed it to the Pike at Mid On.

Wauchop bowled right through for figures of 10 over’s 5 maidens 1 for 13 – a solid platform.

Monty replaced Wauchop with his tweakers – the Stirling batsmen/women started to knock the ball around well and looked comfortable as the score started edging upwards.

Time for change was required and Nelly the partnership breaker was brought into the attack. (Flash was bowling too many wides down leg side – which were in fact missing leg stump by a few centimetres) The variation that was bowled by Nelly was tremendous. In his four over’s Nelly took 2 quick wickets that got Carnegie back into the game. Unfortunately this spell did have Carnegie down to ten men at one point as a tremendous block by Granddad Philip from a Nelly half tracker at cover saw him have to leave the field for a puff of his pipe and a pint as he put on his baffies to recuperate from the knock.

The batsmen again settled and looked like they could see it though – drastic times call for drastic measures and Granddad Philip was called back onto the pitch. He came straight into the attack and after his recuperation took a key wicket caught by Pike at Mid Off. That was the end of his spell – 1 over 1 wicket for 7 runs.

Ross and Monty kept up the attack – Ross bowled with great pace – and took wickets at regular intervals – two caught behind by Miller – one full toss caught at Gully by Muzz - like a burger was being tossed at him.

Monty also got in on the act – enticing Carrie Anderson to go after him as she edged on to Miller who somehow managed to hold onto it. In true sporting fashion she awaited the umpire to trigger her ( I was going to use another word but that didn’t seem appropriate).

Lafferty dropped a dolly off Ross at first slip – almost holding onto it in his chest/arm – he blamed the keeper for getting a touch on it – he had however just taken a great catch a few over’s prior off Nelly.

Gav Ross finished off the Stirling attack with a full straight ball, which instigated the umpire to give the final batsman out LBW.

Stirling had collapsed to 113 all out with Carnegie taking the points homeward to leave Stirling lavishing bottom of the table – with Carnegie now serious promotion candidates.

Additional points of note:-
Bob despite promises never showed up.
Gav Ross achieved Man of Match on his bowling performance
Barney was to blame for throwing the ball at Pike for the second time when he wasn’t looking which instigated a strop at Lafferty/Miller/Ross – we weren’t sure who it was directed to but it seemed to be in that direction.
Thanks for Coming – Well I think Matty Gave it to Muzz – but Harris was a close second for coming through to watch – Bob never made it so couldn’t be considered.
All in all a good game played in good spirits – with a result that consolidated third spot in the league.
