Dollar v Dunfermline Carnegie Cricket Club First Team on Sun 12 Jun 2011 at 1300
Dunfermline Carnegie Cricket Club Lost by 90 runs
Match report
Carnegie travelled to Dollar on Sunday as they made their first foray into the Scottish Cup since circa 2003. Carnegie have a proud history in this tournament having reached the quarter finals of the competition in 2000 (see the link for details of our march to the semi-finals http://www.cricketscotland.com/smcup2000). Many stars of that run were named in the current team including Neil Harris, Matt Lafferty and Niall Walker while Fife cricketing legend David Miller made his much anticipated debut.
Common sense ruled the day when both Captains agreed to reduce the contest to 35 overs a side due to the dodgy weather forecast. Dollar won the toss on a hard track and decided to have a bat, Wauchop and Murray shared the new ball for Carnegie and bowled well without much help from the pitch as Dollar saw off the opening spells without much alarm. Walker replaced Wauchop and quickly had a wicket as Dollar Captain Buchanan-Smith was caught on the mid wicket boundary by the outstanding 'Sir' Brucie. Harris and Nelly were mixing up some cracking deliveries with some utter tosh but Harris managed to clean bowl the useful looking number 3 batsman before taking a caught and bowled to dismiss the other opener. Harris had fallen in and out of love with cricket 8 times during his 7 overs. Lindsay and Callan entered the attack and Carnegie continued to pick up wickets while conceding runs. Lindsay picked up two clean bowled wickets while the outstanding Callan collected a very strange caught behind as the batsman swung early at a long hop down the legside and only succeeded in chipping over his shoulder to Don who held the catch. Wauchop and Butch returned to share a few wickets, largely thanks to the catching prowess of 'Sir' Brucie who bagged an outstanding three catches in the innings. Dollar finished on 226-9 after 35 overs largely thanks to a classy 84 from Buicks. Carnegie fielded well led by 'Sir' Brucie and backed up by JP, Don had a good day behind the stumps. Butch had a credible effort in the long jump clocking up 57cm which is believed to be a Townhill record for field sports. A further special mention to debutant David Miller, 39, who bowled the penultimate over and showed that he has plenty to offer on that front.
Carnegie enjoyed a plentiful tea in the lovely pavilion before Harris and Oh-Nelly-Nelly Walker-Walker strode out to bat. It should be pointed out that Bruce and Murray enjoyed a private tea provided by Mrs Callan. Bruce reflected that "the prawns were excellent, the roast beef tremendous, the monkfish wonderfully tender but the duck was perhaps a little overdone." The other lads enjoyed their sausage rolls and egg mayo sandwiches.
Walker paid for arguing with the umpire when we were fielding as he became the sole LBW victim in the game. Miller joined Harris and both players looked in good touch putting on 50 plus with Harris clearing the cover boundary for a massive six. With the weather closing in Carnegie were keeping in touch with the run rate. Miller, who had oozed class, was run out by Harris for 22 allowing Wauchop to come to the crease. The Kiwi smacked a flat six over mid wicket before being clean bowled, Lindsay was run out by Harris before Murray and Lafferty fell in quick succession. Harris continued to bat well motoring passed his 50 before eventually being clean bowled for 69. The Carnegie lower order showed some good resistance to take Carnegie into the 34 the over before being bowled out for 135.
In reflection Dollars batting won them the game with only Harris and Miller offering any resistancewith the bat for Carnegie. An enjoyable day was had by all though.
