Largo 2nd XI v Dunfermline Carnegie Cricket Club First Team on Sat 03 May 2008 at 13.00
Dunfermline Carnegie Cricket Club Won by 106 runs

Dunfermline Carnegie Comets went into their East League Division 4 clash at Largo without wicketkeeper Neil Harris. He was replaced by the returning Gavin Ross in the only change from the previous weeks win at Watsonians.

On arrival it was clear that the wicket was going to be good for batting so Captain David Mitchell had no hesitation in deciding to bat first. Opening batsman Lafferty and Daughtrey set about the task with relish and made a solid start with Daughtrey in particular setting about the bowling in an aggressive manner.

Barney Matty knocks one away Matty and Barney put on a great partnership

Indeed the openers were not parted until the 23rd over when Lafferty tried one big shot too many and was caught at cover. By this time Daughtrey had been dropped four times and smashed 3 sixes. After the drinks break Daughtrey was eventually caught for a very entertaining 83 which featured a number of boundaries and also two 3's - a very welcome return to form. Gary Steward and Martin 'Handbrake' Honeyford consolidated the innings before Pikey was caught behind bringing the Captain to the wicket.

Pike on the defence

Sensible cricket and good running was the order of the day as both batsman settled in for a big innings. The sun was now out and it was very amusing to watch two of our fitter players struggling for breath. Gary found time to confess that he is an avid reader of the Daily Star and that he enjoys Gavs letters each week.

Lovely square cut from gary Mitch strokes one away for 4.

Mitch was eventually run out for a boundary-less 31 to break a partnership of 78. This brought our resident Kiwi to the wicket who mysteriously left his first ball alone before adopting his traditional 'every games a 20-20' philospohy and banjoing 12 off 5 balls including 2 fours to the longest boundary. At the close of the innings we were 227-4 with Gary unbeaten on 48. A very solid team effort unfortunately meant that we were left with a 'coiled spring' on the sidelines once more.

I must mention the Largo teas again which were wonderful although Barney was a little disappointed by the lack of clotted cream.

Largo made a solid start in reply before Wauchop had the opener brilliantly caught behind the by the wonderfully agile and strangley motivated Gavin Ross. Largos number 3 then took the game to Carnegie by belting the ball to all parts.

Largo had reached 67-1 before Mitch reluctantly brought himself on and immediately caused problems with his variety before having the number 3 batsman well caught by Graham Lindsay for a quickfire 37. Mitch and Martin then applied the brakes with a succession of 'mean' overs whick left Largo 75-2 at drinks.

Gary 'Goldenballs/Action Man' Steward was introduced into the attack and immediately struck to remove the stubborn opener and in the same over he forced the Largo skipper to play on reducing Largo to 75-4. Wickets continued to fall as the bowlers were rotated and Mitch finished the game with figures of 4-19 off ten miserly overs. Nelly and Matty Wow returned to blow away the tail, Nelly finishing with 2-20 and Matty 2-18. The Grey Ghost could hardly walk but continued to bowl in a desperate effort for more points for the Fantasy Cricket.

Largo all out for 116 (I think - I dont have the scorebook). All in all an excellent performance from Carnegie with the batting and the bowling firing. Credit to Largo for their excellent facilities, great teas, hospitality and sporting behaviour. Very enjoyable game as always at East Drive.

Man of the Match was Barney for his barnstorming 83 (dropped 6 times and hit first slip!) while Ralph went from hero to zero as Mitch awarded him the Thanks for Coming Award. In fairness to Ralph there was no histrionics as there was last week from a certain Bob Grunter. Bob was outstanding today with some wonderful photography while Stevie continued to top up his tan. Kev Ross put in a fleeting appearance on his way to a raucous night out in Cupar.

Special mention has to go to our nimble reserve wicketkeeper Gav Ross who was very efficient behind the timbers and managed to concede no byes. Gav even forsaked the pub so he could go home and tell Phil all about it.....
