Dunfermline Carnegie Cricket Club First Team v Kirk Brae on Sat 24 May 2008 at 13.00
Dunfermline Carnegie Cricket Club Won by 4 wickets
Carnegie were dealt a hammer blow when Graham Lindsay was ruled out by knee trouble, luckily an able replacement was found in the shape of Owen Goody.
The weather was overcast but the sun would soon shine through. On winning the toss Mitch decided to bowl first on a very green looking pitch. The Kirkbrae openers were able to score relatively freely in the first 10 overs thanks to a quick outfield as Carnegies opening bowlers of Wauchop and Steward toiled away without success.
It took the introduction of Niall Walker to bring about the breakthrough with Sangster being caught by Handbrake at long off for a well made 32. Another wicket quickly followed as Walker bowled Colvin for 13. A partnership of 49 between Bukes and Thomson took Kirkbrae to 101-2 before Mitch brought Ralph Thomas into the attack . Ralph went for 9 in his first over but soon began to rattle through the Kirkbrae middle order as he finished with excellent figures of 5-45 of his 10 overs.
There was some excellent catching by Honeyford, Mitchell, Walker and Thomas while Steven Hunter excelled in the field. Some lusty blows down the order gave the visitors a total of 175 all out which too, be honest, seemed out of our reach on a dodgy wicket.
In reply openers Lafferty and Daughtrey showed immense bravery and courage under fire from the new ball. The openers did well to shield the middle order for so long and it took some stunning bowling (and the umpires inability to count to 6!!)to end their heroic resistance.
At 13-2 we were in trouble but a great partnership between Gary 'Gok Wan' Steward and 12 year old David Mitchell took us to 80-2 before Mitch gloved behind. Handbrake and Gary added a further 40 before Gary ran himslef out but Pike continued to bat sensibly and was ably assisted by Matt Wauchop who thumoed a quickire 26.
Martin was eventually out LBW for 32 (much to his annoyance!!) meaning that it was left to Nelly and Bob to guide the good ship Carnegie home. Bob showed an assured touch at the crease and struck a fine final ball to win the game. A word of praise to Kirkbraes bowlers, in particular, Hansen and Sangster who bowled exceptionally well with little luck.
In conclusion it was a thoroughly entertaining game to play in between two evenly matched teams who play the game in the correct spirit. Good luck to Kirkbrae for the rest of the season.
Ralph Thomas took Man of the Match for Carnegie while Nelly deserves a mention for some excellent bowling. Gary played another excellent innings while Martin, Mitch and Matt also contributed well. A very good victory for a relatively inexperienced Carnegie side. TFC was awarded to Kevin Ross.
