Dunfermline Carnegie Cricket Club Won 3 wicket victory

Match report The Carnegie boys woke up to a sunny Saturday but it wasnt without a headache or two for the club committee. With a solid XI selected and confirmed, Carnegie were rocked by 3 late call-offs after this weeks availabilities had been slim pickings. With our star "finisher" batsmen stuck in Dublin departures, Carnegie had 7 with just two hours before start of play. Fortunately, Barney had a Lazarus type come back and then with some creative thinking, all of a sudden we had XI. Ros Adam was cajoled into a fielding slot, Carnegie's first female player in a decade. Stewart Walker was coaxed out of retirment, hopeful of banishing memories of the last time he played, the final part of the "Walker, Bath, Walker" trilogy. Finally, Ally Cameron appeared from no where, willing to help his pals out. Ally too had ghosts to vanquish, with memories of his 13 ball over a decade ago still fresh in the mind.

So, with 11 hearty souls and Bob en route, Mitch won the toss and Carnegie went into bowl. Nelly and Gary started with tight bowling, with Gary getting plenty bounce from the tasty top end. Nelly bowled with line, length, but no luck. After a dozen overs, and only 20 on the score, Pike replaced Nelly at the posh end. Immediate success for the "specialist bowler" with a wicket in his first over. Gary then took a wicket with a sound catch by Jason. Gary bowled through with 1 for 17 off 10, the best he has bowled for a good while. Pike couldnt replicate the magic of the first over and conceded a few boundaries.

This brought Mitch on all the posh end with Graham bowling from the bell end. Despite Mitch's first two overs going for ten, and a spectactular catch attempt by Ally going abegging, the usual service resumed with a good LBW from Mitch.

It should be mentioned at this point that Carnegies fielding was very sharp, and this was primarily led by Jason (taking the gloves for the first time) with a couple of catches and only 6 byes conceded. Stewart fielded well displaying a textbook application of the long barrier. But a special mention must go to Doctor Ros - "the good doctor" - time and again she snaffled many balls that were destined for the boundary and her presence must have saved 20 or 30 runs, which turned out to be crucial in the end.

Graham started well from the top end, but loosened off somewhat after a promising start.

Mitch got on song, and he finished up with 4 for not many (again no scorebook handy). The pick of the bunch was a sharp catch and appeal from Jason for a snick of batsmen Colin Smith. Jason's sole appeal was rewarded by the umpire confirming the batsmen was out, and then Jason spending 5 minutes convincing everyone that he was out. Well done Jase.

The champagne moment of the game, perhaps the season then followed. The outgoing batsmen was somewhat disgruntled by his dismissal and grumpily made his way to the boundary. After a quick throw of the bat, he then proceeded to take off his gloves and pads before throwing these items all over the place, much to the hilarity of both teams. It was later revealed that Holy Cross have a "throw the rattle out of the pram" annual award, which had been automatically given to Smith for such an outrageous outburst. Quality. Potentially a candidate for the Carnegie Champagne Moment 2008?

Bob then arrived at the ground in his whites and this brought to the end Doctor Ros involvement in the game. She left to a standing ovation from both teams.

Ally Cameron was fast becoming the skippers favourite player with two sharp catches at point. So, as a reward, he was brought on at the bell in for a chance to banish those 13 ball over demons. And indeed he did. After an introductory two overs, and a chat from Barney, Ally then got his just rewards with two good wickets to help finish off the Holy Cross tail, aided by Walker who picked up his solitary wicket at the start of his second spell.

At the end, we had a team huddle, and Mitch congratulated the whole team on a cracking effort to bowl out a strong Holy Cross for 127.

A nice tea was had, and during this Ally and Nelly were nominated to open the batting.

With a shift looming, Ally's role was "pinch hitter". He scored a quick ten, with a couple of fours before holing out.

Ally was replaced by Steward who looked ready to take on the short pitch bowling from the giant bell end bowler. He cut a few, before knicking behind.

At the other end, Walker took an age to get his eye in, but held up and end for a good while. With the ball all over the place, Walker played the ball with arm, leg, belly, back, shoulder and face before remembering that he hat a bat with him. 20 for Walker who saw off 17 tricky overs against some good bowling.

Mitchell came in and looked to attack, but fell early in his innings when he got an unplayable shooter.

Pike holed out to cover, and Carnegie were 80 for 5, chasing 128 to win.

This led to Barney and Graham at the crease. Lindsay led the way with some crisply placed shots all round the ground. Barney was enjoying his new role and was batting with calmness and responsibility. A few extras were welcome (36 in total), and all of a sudden Carnegie need 20 off 12 overs.

This brought back the giant bowler from the bell end who peppered Barney for an excrutiating over. With Phil unable to play off one leg, it was no more than a battering. Phil was bowled at the start of the next over and this brought Bob "finisher" Hunter to the crease.

Graham led the way and just as the game looked as if all three results were possible, hit a lovely four through square leg. We then picked up a cheeky leg bye and were tantalisingly close. Bob saw off the final over from the giant, and Lindsay placed the winning runs in the gap.

A super win for Carnegie!!

After the game, a good few beers were enjoyed in the sun by both teams

Man of the Match was awarded to Ally Cameron. One comeback, 2 wickets, 10 runs and two catches.

However, given the massive team effort where everyone competed, the captain and vice captain would like to thank all the players for their play on Saturday. The attitude was spot on. Ros, Stewart and Ally helped us out and were excellent. Thanks also to Bob for jetting home to fulfill his role as "finisher" and to Barney for playing whilst in pain.

There was no thanks for coming award this week.

We move onto a Tuesday night match versus Glenrothes as we prepare for Saturdays trip to Townhill.
