Townhill v Dunfermline Carnegie Cricket Club First Team on Sat 14 Jun 2008 at 13.00
Dunfermline Carnegie Cricket Club Won by 9 runs
Match report
Carnegie travelled to their local league rivals Townhill for our annual low scoring and rain affected match. We got off to the worst of starts by losing the toss and a delighted Townhill captain inserted us to bat on a farmyard like wicket.
Lindsay and Lafferty opened the batting and after a lovely flick to mid wicket, Lindsay was trapped for only 2 when he failed to go forward and was the victim of a Townhill "classic". Steward joined Lafferty but fell to the catch of the season, a cracking reactionary catch by Murray at short gulley seeing Gary back in the hutch for only 3. Lafferty then fell caught behind and Carnegie were rocking at 16 for 3. With rain looming, it was very reminiscent of our 2007 fixture, which was rained off, with Carnegie looking as if 50 was a long way off.
Mitchell and Pike took to the crease, and set about re building the Carnegie innings with a series of singles. Their partnership of 28 taking Carnegie to 42 before Pike was caught. Mitchell fell shortly after for a score of 15, and then Matty Wauchop came and went for 0.
Walker and Harris came together at 42 for 5 and batted for ages, with I think byes top scoring. Harris got his eye in and played some lovely strokes to reach 22. Walker hed his end up for a long time, but for only 2 runs before Walker was run out. A top partnership of 30 never the less.
Hunter replaced Walker and took the match to the opposition with an agressive 5 before being bowled. This brough both Ross brothers to the crease with the score at 81. With a target of 100, both brothers played with a sensible head, and steered Carnegie to 94 all out. The final over by Murray saw one ball despatched for four, the next ball hit Kev in the throat, and the final ball, smashing all three stumps over.
The lower order doubled the score, and at least 94 was something to defend
Carnegie opened with Mitchell and Steward leading the attack. Steward was unlucky not to take a wicket with his second ball, a straight forward catch dropped by Walker. He got his reward soon after and took 2 for 31 in his first 7 overs.
with not a lot to defend, Carnegie needed to keep the run rate down and let the Townhill batsmen earn their victory. Mitchell did just this with a miserly 10 overs, 1 for 7, with 7 maidens. A tight as mark philips wallet!
Matty Wauchop bowled straight through first change, and bowled very well. 10 overs 5 maidens, 2 for 11.
Halfway through the 50 overs, Townhill were 48 for 4 and the match looked in the balance. Harris bowled 7 overs for 15 with one wicket over 2 spells and kept the match competitive.
But the players of the day were the Ross brothers. Gav excelled behind the stumps all day, and with the ball bouncing inconsistenly off the track, he did very well to only let one bye past him with some great stops.
The saviour was introduced with Towngill edging towards the 95 mark, and he had an immediate impact. The Changing man took a wicket with his 2nd and 15th balls and Townhill were in tatters. However, it was Ross' third wicket, a bellly led snaffle off the dangerous townhill batsmen that changed the game. Youg Hynd came in at the end and looked the part. He and McKinlay attempted to sneak Townhill over the line, before McKinlay was bowled with Townhill 8 short of a tie.
Man of the match went to Gavin Ross for some fantastic work behind the stumps. TFC went to Niall Walker. Kevin Ross branded himself "the saviour"
