Kirk Brae v Dunfermline Carnegie Cricket Club First Team on Sat 26 Jul 2008 at 13.00
Dunfermline Carnegie Cricket Club Won 62 Run victory

How do you get to Double Hedges Road? That's easy - end of the meadows and take a right!

Carnegie travelled over the bridge to a sunny and picturesque Edinburgh on Saturday for a competitive fixture against a good Kirk Brae side, who were looking for revenge, after Carnegie stole a win at Pitreavie earlier in the season.

We arrived at Double Hedges to be delighted by the sight of a much improved wicket and small boundary. Lafferty lost the toss and Carnegie were inserted.

Harris and Lindsay opened, and Harris fired 6 runs off the first over. A maiden followed before Snow got Lindsay to knick one to the keeper. Fair play for Graham for walking when the knick was in doubt.

This brought Gary to the crease in the 3rd over, he was to be there until 45th and prove to be the bedrock of the Carnegie innings.

Gary takes a sore one

Harris continued to play with class, and ran along merrily until he was dismissed on 19, when the first change bowler Sangster got a ball to spike up off the pitch and for Harris to glove it behind. Carnegie have ambled along to 39 for 2 off 15 at this stage.

Martin joined Gary at the crease, and the pair took their time to see off some good bowling. Kirk Brase bowled with good line and length throughout the innings, with the ball moving in the air and off the pitch.

The partnership between the Fonz and Pike was slow and steady (not boring Kev), and it took Martin a good few overs to get his eye in before he thumped one over long off for a nice four. Unfortunately, Martin then go the better of himself, lost concentration and was caught in the same place 2 overs later. A good score of 20 for Martin, in a partnership of 35 which lasted 15 overs.

Carnegie are now 74 for 3 off 30 overs. Wickets in hand, and the old mantra of "we should double our score in the last 20 overs" were rolled out.

The returning Daughtrey came in at 6 and blazed a quality boundary before being clean bowled for 9 runs.

This brought skipper Lafferty to the crease in the 36th over with the score on 95. Lafferty continued his recent FPL form, and started knocking the ball around into spaces and he and Gary formed a fluid partnership which was producing a good few runs. Gary had been batting conservatively for 30 overs, but at this stage he was beginning to bat with real confidence and aggression.

After a lively partnership of 36 off 60 balls, Gary was bowled for 35.

This brought Walker to the crease. He and Lafferty set about a target of "a run a ball" off the remaining 35 balls. We made it, just, with a partnership of 37. Highlights were 2 lovely cuts from Matty for four, a lofted on drive from Nelly for four and a lot of stolen singles. Nelly was run out off the last ball, but with the job done, and the score of 164 for 6 off 50 overs.

A nice tea was taken in the sun, and Carnegie went out to defend their 164 total with the sun out and two bi-planes circling overhead.

Kevin opened the bowling with Gary, and both bowlers found themselves in a real challenge with the attacking Kirk Brae openers Colvin and Sangster in real form. Gary's first over was creamed for 19 runs, so much credit goes to him for coming back in his second over and snapping up a caught and bowled to get rid of the dangerous Colvin. I had a look at the scoreboard, and after four overs the score was 33 for 1 - incredible!

Kev was really putting his back into his bowling (except for a rank full toss slow ball that nearly ended up in Princes Street), and credit to the big man for bowling his 6 overs for only 15 runs when the Kirk Brae batsmen were looking to despatch every ball - pace and control from Kev.

Sangster was the man we wanted. His record in 2008 has been noticeable, and Carnegie knew that the longer he stayed in, the less likely 20 points were going to be coming our way.

Gary Steward can get a batsmen out by any means! A caught and bowled off a full toss was the method used to take out Kirk Brae's top batsmen.

Considering Gary's first over went for 19, to finish with 31 for 2 off 5 overs shows that Carnegie's own action man can rise to the challenge.

It was Walker and Ross who were first change. After Walkers first over went for 2, Gav came back with a bang. What a ball! his first delivery has swing and pace and sent middle stump flying. This sparked a bit of a party as Carnegie sensed that victory was achievable.

Walker's second over started with a 4, but he rolled out his slow ball later in the over and this took off stump, and Carnegie had four down.

Gav then clean bowled another two batsmen in his third and fourth over, before running out of puff. A pacey, economical and remarkable return for the Fife Circle. What no one can understand is why Gav asks for a "fly slip at 2nd and 3/4 position".

Nelly trundled along with a wicket maiden in his sixth over and a third and final wicket of his day in his 9th. 3 for 15 off 10.

Graham and Michael were second change. Graham took a ball or two to find his line, but then bowled a teasing line and length to temp the batsmen into driving the ball. Kev took a nice catch at mid on to get Graham his wicket.

Bob was again "the finisher". His initial "first class wicket" was heralded by a neat catch at cover by Gary. 102 all out.

The bowling was controlled, depsite attacking play from Kirk Brae. But a main difference between the teams was fielding. Carnegie stopped everything, with Steward, Stringer and Hunter exceptional in the field.

A nice drink with the opposition in the sun, and a drive back over the bridge with 20 points in the bag. Happy days.
