Match report
Dunfermline Carnegie beat the weather but could not overcome league leaders Musselburgh in their East of Scotland Division Four match at Pitreavie on Saturday. Heavy rain on Friday meant that parts of the Pitreavie outfield were still under water on Saturday morning leaving the game in doubt. A successful mopping up operation meant the game could go ahead although a further downpour delayed the start and reduced the game to 45 overs a side. Returning Carnegie Captain David Mitchell won the toss and had no hesitation in asking Musselburgh to bat. Musselburgh’s openers began with a flurry of boundaries and aided by some sloppy fielding they brought up the century partnership in only 12 overs. Even Mitchell, Division Fours leading wicket-taker, was unable to stem the flow of runs as he was whacked for 39 off only 4 overs. It was left to Gavin Ross to break the partnership by trapping the opener for a rapid 93 but this was the only wicket for Carnegie until the later overs when Ross struck again along with Niall Walker. Musselburgh had amassed 271-3 off their 45 overs and were very much in the driving seat at this stage. Things got even better for Musselburgh as they reduced Carnegie to 2-2 in the second over with the dismissal of both Carnegie openers. It was left to Matt Lafferty and Gary Steward to steady the ship with a fighting stand of 51 before Lafferty was bowled for 15. Steward became the aggressor and he was unlucky to be dismissed for a well crafted 42 which led to a middle order collapse as Carnegie fell to 80-8. At this stage Carnegie could easily have been all out in no time at all but Gavin Ross and Ralph Thomas showed a tremendous fighting spirit with an unbroken stand of 52 for the ninth wicket. Ross hit some excellent boundaries while Thomas picked off the singles at will. Ross finished on a career best 33 not out and Thomas a Carnegie best 15 not out as Carnegie finished on 130-8. Carnegie Captain David Mitchell described Musselburgh as ‘easily the best team we have faced this year as they have great depth to their batting and bowling’. Mitchell was keen to find positives in a poor Carnegie performance and praised Gavin Ross and Ralph Thomas commenting that ‘they both showed they have plenty ability with the bat and it may be time to move them up the batting line up especially with the way our middle order batted’. Man of the Match for Carnegie, who travel to Holy Cross next week, was Gavin Ross.
