Broomhall v Dunfermline Carnegie Cricket Club Midweek 8 a side on Tue 17 Jun 2008 at 6.30pm
Dunfermline Carnegie Cricket Club Lost by 95 runs

Dunfermline Carnegie Comets lit up the Fife Premier League at Limekilns Dome last night with a display of extraordinary hitting. After Saturday's narrow win over Townhill the Comets rang the changes with the self proclaimed Saviour, Kevin Ross, jettisoned along with Gary Steward who was on a night out with Gok Wan and Trinny and Susannah. David Mitchell was lucky to come in as 9th man. Despite the heavy rain during the day we arrived at Broomhall to find the ground in immaculate condition complete with a pair of randy pheasants (not Mitch and Nelly). On losing the toss Captain Matthew Lafferty was not too disappointed to be asked to field. The responsibilty of opening the bowling was given to Bob Hunter and Nelly Walker and it was El Nel who struck first thanks to a brilliant sliding catch from The Shunter. It was a great catch by Stevie but only because he had started to run the wrong way and only went back to catch the ball when 7 players and 3 passers by shouted 'STEVIE'S!!!' Despite the early wicket the Broomhall batsman hammered Walker, Hunter and Stringer to all parts forcing Lafferty to bring himself on for the first time in 7 years. What followed was a brilliant display of wrist spin as Lafferty immediately dropped onto an immaculate length and tied the batsman in knots. A clearly impressed David Mitchell watched from the boundary where he was bowling at the remaining Broomhall batsman to ensure they were in great nick when they got to the middle. At the other end Shunter bowled a great spell of 4 overs for 31 runs which culminated in the wicket of Stuart Glasgow. At the end of the 20 overs Broomhall had posted a challenging 189 for 5

In reply Carnegie opted for the experienced pairing of Graham Lindsay and 20-20 specialist Matt Lafferty at the top of the order. Carnegie went off like a train and raced to 49-0 in the fourth over (its true this week!!) before Lafferty was caught behind on the hook shot for 18 which included three boundaries. This did nothing to slow down the G-Man who was smacking the ball to all parts including one huge six down the ground. Graham was eventually caught for 36, a knock which included 7 fours, 1 six and only 2 singles - brilliant!! Stringer and Goody fell to good bowling before Broomhall captured the prize scalp of Bob Hunter for 2. This left the Shunter to continue the Carnegie assualt and he began it with a crashing 5 that went via point to the mid-on boundary before smashing a four over square legs head. Stevie was eventually bowled for a career best 10 (much to his brothers relief as Stevie homed in on Bob's career best score of 15!). Frank was cleaned up first ball to leave Nelly high and dry on a career best 7 not out.

In the end we lost again but the main positives were the batting and bowling of the Shunter and Graham's brilliant innings of 36 off about 15 balls. Just goes to show we dont need the self proclaimed Saviour. The ground fielding was excellent particularly Owen's while Nelly had a tremendous run out. Next week we host Kinross Crusaders and hope to avenge our early season defeat. A victory will keep us in with a chance of the play-offs. Joint Men of the Match were Graham and Stevie.

After the game we all sang 'The Red Flag' for Mitch and headed home.
