Broomhall v Dunfermline Carnegie Cricket Club First Team on Sat 16 May 2009 at 1pm
Dunfermline Carnegie Cricket Club Lost Broomhall wins by 7 wickets
Match report
Carnegie arrived at a mirky Broomhall to find a flat looking wicket but very wet outfield. The club had taken delivery of the Centenary kit, so Bob was good enough to bring his tripod, and we got a 2009 team photo with vice president Wullie Honeyford.
Mitch lost the toss as usual and Broomhall put us in. It was Barney's last stand for Carnegie and he was eager to go out with a bang - and what a start - first ball thumped down the ground for 4. Barney went 4,4,4,4,4,4,6,1,1,1, before stopping for a breather in no time at all. He then slowed down a little and was unlucky to be caught on the boundary when he mistimed a hit. In the interim, Matty had been dismissed thanks to a quality catch at short mid wicket. Graham Lindsay started slowly, and looked in good nick, but was unfortunately run out when going for a quick single. Harris was then bowled for 6. The loss of 4 quick wickets slowed Carnegie down from 28 for 0, to 62 for 4.
Mitch and Pike then set about re balancing the innings, and they stopped the fall of wickets Pike was looking good, but a lazy lob to the boundary saw him out caught, when if he had hit through the shot, it would have been six.
Matt Wauchop came into support Mitch, and he started steadily and was watchful, before hitting his first scoring shot - a huge 6 over square leg. Mitch then became "best supporting actress" accumulating runs and getting Wauchop on strike. His 22 helped Carnegie transform their innings slump into a healthy total to defend
Wauchop then got his eye in, and despite a well controlled spell by Glasgow - he began to score at will.
When Mitchell fell with 6 overs remaining, Gav came in, and scored a 4 off his first ball, a nice thin cut to 3rd man.
Both batsmen then set about aggregating the highest total possible. This brought Matty his 50, and he ended up on a sexy 69 not out. Gav ended up with 19 not out, and Carnegie posted 199 off 50 overs. A top score for May, or you would have thought!
The pitch was still soaking, but Broomhall came out and attacked from the off. The Ross brothers struggled for consistency and this allowed Bell and Andrews to get going.
Harris was brought on and conjured a nick from Andrews to give Barney a catch in his last match.
Another Andrews then came to the wicket, and initially looked eager to get out, but steadied himself and began to build a solid innings. Neither Wauchop, Harris, Mitchell, Walker or Urolagin could dismiss him.
Gav took care of Jamie Bell, but this only brought in another strong bat in Grant.
He and Andrews the 2nd, then set about a match winning partnership of 117.
Carnegie were rattled, and reverted to a 2nd spell of Kev bowling, this time leg spin on a wet track - but it bloody worked! Mitch catching Andrews the 2nd.
A former Carnegie captain then came out to bat for Broomhall to pantomime boos from the upper circle. Ian Bold was clearly pumped and smashed his way to a quick fire 22 not out
Broomhall reached 203 for 3 in 32.3 overs - an amazing run rate
Positives for Carnegie - our ability to re-build an innings through Mitch, Wauchop and Gav - 199 will get us a win most weeks
It was a below par bowling performance, but with 7 or 8 "first team" bowlers able to win matches - then we have the quality to recover and get a first win this Saturday
Man of the Match wen to Matty Wauchop
Thanks for Coming was shared by Matty and Nelly.
Special thanks to Bob Hunter for gallantly juggling the roles of 12th man, and club photographer. It was good to get a few photos of Barney in his last match
The club then decanted up the Toon for a "bye bye curry night" for Barney and Noirin. The club had all signed a bat, and put together a hamper of Scottish Treats as mementos of his time at Carnegie - 6 years as batsmen, wicket keeper, captain, boss, tenant, mate, golf partner, cycling buddy, running partner - he will be missed by all at the club.
