Dunfermline Carnegie Cricket Club First Team v Townhill on Sat 23 May 2009 at 1pm
Dunfermline Carnegie Cricket Club Won By 2 Wickets

Match report Dunfermline Carnegie recorded their first victory of the season against Townhill at Pitreavie on Saturday. With a full strength bowling attack available skipper David Mitchell had no hesitation in winning the toss and asking Townhill to bat first. Gavin Ross got the ball rolling with a breathtaking caught and bowled to dismiss Pringle and immediately put Townhill on the back foot. At the other end Kevin Ross struck to dismiss Hynd thanks to a good catch by Urolagin. Carnegie rotated the bowlers well and wickets continued to fall at both ends. The highlight was the dismissal of the dangerous Murray who was brilliantly caught at wide first slip by the outstanding Lafferty of the bowling of Wauchop. More excellent catches followed as Carnegie surprised themselves with a fielding masterclass. Townhill were dismissed in the 37th over for 68. While the ‘much hyped’ bowlers bowled okay it was very much the fielding spearheaded by Lafferty and Hunter that impressed.

In reply Carnegie lost the huge wicket of Lafferty early doors and he was soon followed back to the non-moving scoreboard by Lindsay, Walker, Mitchell and Honeyford. Harris steadied the ship and refused to let any concerns about the pitch get into his head as he battled his way through some good bowling. Harris was eventually dismissed for a Man of the Match winning 23. Wauchop clattered a few to left field before being caught while Gavin ‘Goose’ Ross showed a cool head in the face of adversity to guide the Carnegie ship through some troubled waters. Bob ‘Gilly’ Hunter failed to show a cool head as his hoick across the line with one run required saw his middle stump removed. Thankfully Monty was not to be phased by the situation as he calmly whacked the ball 98% of the way to the boundary and stood and watched it. Carnegie victorious by two runs.

Having reflected on the game I can safely say that I am subscribing to the old age that catches win matches. Nine catches out of nine were taken on Saturday which is the first time I can remember this happening! The fielding turned some pretty ordinary deliveries into wickets while the least said about the batting the better!! Next week we play Stewarts Melville at Inverleith so there can be no excuses about the pitch. Thursday nite is a great opportunity to face the bowling machine and get in some practice for the weekend. Just look at me to see what can be achieved!!

In a match where the combined bowling figures for both teams were 80.4 overs, 30 maidens, 127 runs and 18 wickets it was only fair that the Man of the Match went to a batsman in the shape of Neil Harris.

Thanks for Coming was controversially awarded to Gilly.
