Match report
A depleted Carnegie Comets side made the pleasant trip up the M90 to take on Kinross in the Fife Premier League on Tuesday evening. There is no doubting that the venue at Kinross House is very pleasing on the eye and the Comets squad did their level best to resemble tourists as they took photos of the house and rainbows etc. Captain Lafferty won the toss and as usual decided to have a bowl as he had some serious firepower to unleash. Niall Walker set the tone for the innings as he was whacked for boundaries on both sides of the wicket in his first over. James Bream was either bowling wides or totally unplayable deliveries at the other end. David Mitchell was drafted into the attack and and managed to drag the run rate back with an accurate spell of 1-22 from 4 overs. Matthew Lafferty and Bob 'Gilly' Hunter bowled with intent and intelligence and were unlucky to go at 10 runs an over. Carnegie fought back in the later overs with Owen Goody claiming a wicket as he bowled the penultimate over for only 3 runs while Lafferty struck at the death cleaning up the batsman with a devilish yorker which hit the base of off stump on the second bounce. Kinross finished on 189-3. The ground fielding was excellent and no catches were dropped. We did well to keep going for 20 overs against some very good batsman. One wonders what said batsman would have got out of this game?
In reply Carnegie opted to go with youth at the top of the order in the shape of Lafferty and Mitchell. A solid start was essential and was duly delivered by the youngsters who combined sharp running between the wickets with some clever placement. Carnegie were going along steadily if not spectacularly until the Kinross bowler decided to bounce Mitchell and was promptly thumped for 16 runs in the over. Mitchell hammered the next over almost exclusively through square leg as 20 runs were scored in the over. In the blink of an eye Mitch had got to 53 and had to retire just as he was beginning to dream of his century. The opening partnership of 88 came in less than 11 overs and created a new Comets FPL record for opening partnership and any wicket partnership. Jugs of Honey Ale will surely follow. James Bream came and went via a leading edge before Lafferty departed for a crafty 34. Walker and Hunter arrived at the wicket and put on a handy little partnership before Walker was bowled for 17. Hunter showed great determination and discipline as well as no little selfishness to finish the game on 7 not out while Donald ended on 2 not out. Carnegie Comets finished on a tournament record 127-3 from 20 overs.
Overall it was a gutsy and determined effort in the field and with the bat while the bowlers struggled on a good batting wicket.
Man of the Match has to be reluctantly awarded to David Mitchell (sorry Bob) for his economical bowling and barnstorming half century.
As is tradition the Club Captain is always awarded the TFC award when he plays in the FPL and last night was no different so step forward David Mitchell.
