Dunfermline Carnegie Cricket Club Won by 2 wickets
Match report
The re-branded Carnegie Cheatahs gate crashed the FPL Grand Final race with an astonishingly brilliant victory over Dunnikier Dragons in Kirkcaldy. Carnegie took the brave step of adopting a brand new strategy on the eve of the game and left out David Mitchell, Niall Walker and Kevin Ross. In came 20-20 specialist Matt Wauchop and the come backing J.Mark Philips the Third. D-Ream missed out as he was on paternity leave.
Carnegie won the toss and elected to bowl first on a damp and green track. Hunter and Wauchop took the new ball while Walley took the gloves. Both bowlers bowled steadily before Wauchop was hooked after two economical overs to be replaced by Owais Goody. Goody struck early having Braid caught by Wauchop while Hunter had Booth caught behind by the outstanding Walley for 1. Into the attack creaked Phil and he started with two wides which he attributed to his excessive ability to swing. Phil did pitch his legendary slow ball and had the dangerous Baird Jnr caught by Wauchop at mid off. Goody struck again clean bowling Skene before Phil continued his dream return by bowling Willoughby for 2 and having Budd caught behind by Walley for 5. Phil finished with the awesome return of 3-11 - Roy of the Rovers stuff from the Dundonian. At 66-6 Dunnikier were in deep trouble but Carnegie opted not to recall Wauchop and give Shunter and JP the opportunity to impress with the ball. At this stage I need to apologize to Owen and Stevie for the two absolute sitters I dropped at mid off. JP may have broken a record but all eight of us have a solemn pact of silence and will never reveal how many deliveries his one over contained. Kumar and Thomson put on a very good unbroken partnership of 55 to guide Dunnikier to 121-6 in 20 overs. Some great fielding with Donald outstanding behind the stumps, JP shut down the off side and Shunter and Owen pinged the ball in from the outfield.
Carnegie opened with the modest duo of Wauchop and Hunter. What a decision that proved to be!! Carnegie progressed serenely to 91-0 after 14 overs. Wauchop thumped 6 fours in a responsible innings while Hunter showed great discipline and concentration to play the (w)anchor role. Hunter was eventually run out for a career best 25. Bob needs to learn that if you are utilizing the full length dive it’s an idea to get something over the white line! Bon flat out and run out for 25. JP came in at number 3 and flicked his first ball through square leg for 2. Unfortunately for JP he lost his footing turning for the second run and couldn't quite make it safely home. Very unlucky but a strike rate of 100 none the less. Wauchop was on 49 and went for glory being caught on the boundary (surprise!!) - Very good innings though. Lafferty and Walley came together and Don looked in good nick before he was run out coming back for a third. It did not help that he pulled a hamstring turning for the third! Carnegie had gone from 91-0 to 98-4 and the required rate was over run a ball. Out came Phil who clunked his first ball over point for 2. Phil played 4 shots at a delivery from Thomson and missed the lot to be bowled. Shunter arrived at the crease with 12 needed off 8 and promptly thumped his fist ball for 3, Lafferty followed with a single. 8 needed of the last over!! The first ball was hit for 3 by Lafferty and followed by a Hunter single. Lafferty then flicked a 2 before hitting the 3rd last ball of the match to the boundary to secure a memorable victory for Carnegie!!
What a night for the depleted Cheatahs!! A great team effort with excellent contributions from all eight players. Personal responsibility was certainly taken in abundance as guys stood up and were counted.
Man of the Match was Phil for his bowling. Phil spent most of the game either bowling, smoking or laughing at team-mates! TFC in the absence of David Mitchell was me for dropping those 2 catches.
This great victory was dedicated by a clearly emotional Bob Hunter (and the rest of the team) to the Bream's and their new arrival.
Glenrothes here we come!!!
